vinyl gingko carry on!!

i finally made something with vinyl again! i'm so happy, i've been sorely neglecting vinyl lately. damn altered art and papercrafts!

the fabulous vanillaxlight has been here visiting me, so instead of making something and mailing it to her, i made her a carry-on bag to take home with her! (which is good, cause she bought way too much stuff, and needed the extra packing capacity!)

(as usual, blogger is eating half the pics! click them to see the full picture!)

Photobucket
it's very big... about 20" wide, 15" tall, and about 7" deep. (we checked the airline requirements first!)
Photobucket
the straps have nylon strapping inside them, to give them strength.
Photobucket
the back, with a little leaf on the corner of the pocket. the pocket snaps shut with heavy duty snaps, so it doesn't gape.

pockets! i didn't have time to line it, but i wanted to have interior pockets, so i sewed them on behind the exterior pocket to hide the seams - i feel so sneaky! you can see the backs of the snaps above them.

detail shot, to show the green topstitching.
Photobucket
without flash, more accurate colours.
Photobucket
with flash, to see the shimmer of the green vinyl. i love this vinyl, it's so fabulous, and it looks so sharp with the chocolatey brown!

she LOVES it, and i'm really happy with it too! if i'd had more time, i think i'd have used the green to pipe the edges, like i did with my own cherry carryon, but oh well!

and as i'd hoped, making this bag inspired me to start doing more stuff with vinyl... i have almost 30 wristlets all appliques and ready to be sewn together now, i've been working on them in stages for a few weeks right now, i just need to find th time to finish them!

numbers and an art bird

i just realized i haven't posted a tip in or chunky page in a while.... i'm working on a few right now, so i won't post them until they're received, but these two have been received already...

(this is the first thing i've made with my new glitter vinyl, FYI!)
i do really like it, though i think i should have gone over "art" with a lighter shade of blue... it's pretty simple, but i'm hoping the novelty of vinyl with make up for that... i really like this vinage vinyl, with shades of blue and green. on the back, i randomly sewed all over it in the blue, just to add a bit more interest.

i did the embroidery when i was in portland, i planned the project before i left, because i wanted something that was more portable than regular papercrafts. i dyed the fabric with coffee, then stamped all over it and embroidered it. the little frames are filled with glossy accent, which makes them look like they're filled with resin (i learned that in my new tim holtz book!).

i still can't decide if i like it or not.... i LOVE the number stamps i used, i desperately want letter stamps in that font... if you've seen them anywhere, TELL me!!!

......

today i went to see my friend j for a brunch party in her new home. as usual, it was lovely to see her, as i quite adore her, and her new home suits her perfectly - a period house, very beautifully kept up, full of her treasures and bits of artwork and pieces with meaning that she has collected over the years, all displayed in such a way that they can be truly appreciated.

it's been commented that upon walking in my front door, it is immediately evident that a costumer lives in my house. at the time of the comment, two of us actually did, and we're both such slobs that it WAS immediately evident. j's house is equally evident, for much different reasons! her collection of sewing baskets, her appreciation for art, her little shrines, all send the same message, but in a much more delghtful way! i wish i could say that one day i aspire to be like her, but i think my packrat tendancies will prevent that from ever happening...

j is a friend who i met years ago, a fellow crafter/artist/quilter/sewer/vancouverite, at a conference half way across the country. after several years of attempting to get together for tea, we finally did, and we've seen each other rather randomly ever since. one of the things i most adore about j, and have since our first meeting, is what an incredibly supportive person she is. though i've appreciated this part of her character immensely within the labour movement, i think i appreciate it even more on a creative level.

every time she introduces me to anyone she knows, it is always with an excited note that "a is an amazing sewer/artist/whichever word she uses that day, and a makes the most incredible stuff!". she is always so full of enthusiasm and support, and it's so appreciated. as artists, i think we all have moments where they wonder if everyone else likes our creations as much as we do, or if our ideas are really as original as we think they are, and as many time as we're told that we rock (my mod girls are quite fabulous about that, actually!), it's still so lovely to hear, especially from someone who makes items as beautiful as j.

as has become our custom, since we see each other so randomly, today we had a bit of a "show and tell" session, with j showing me things that she had made since i last saw her, or things i hadn't seen the last time. of course, everything she showed me was incredibly detailed, with so much meaning behind every little piece. it's immensely inspiring, and something that i wish i did more in my own pieces. i came home today thinking about this, and looking at pieces that i'm planning in a whole new light. i'm very good at obsessively planning detailed pieces, but they rarely see completion, as they're put aside in favour of the quickly completed ideas. i need to work on this.

i took j several of my pewter castings, both virgin marys, as i knew she would appreciate the texture created by the sand, as well as the images themselves. i had intended to make a card as well, but the basement flooding yesterday meant any crafting plans were neglected.

she had unexpected presents for me as well, and they were all so lovely!
Photobucket
among these are a handmade mary card (as i said, i knew she would appreciate the pewter mary!), with a lady of guadalupe charm inside, and rhinestones on the outside, a basting needle for quilting, a beautiful piece of antique cloth with flowers on it that i need to find the perfect use for, an old needle book, several religious cards, and a card with an image from a piece j herself made for an art show last fall, which i desperately wanted!

as if that wasn't enough, she also gave me a little organza bag with these goodies inside.
Photobucket
the vintage needles are from a family member who was a milliner (history increases the personal value of everything!), and the little tin of whimsies is actually a strange coincidence. i've seen the jars of whimsies around, but hadn't paid much attention, and in the last few days, talk has started on craftster.org of doing a jar of whimsies swap, and i quickly became obsessed with the idea of them and yesterday i was greatly bemoaning the lack of space in my swap queue to participate! the little tin is even more special, because she put it together for me specifically. i resisted opening it immediately, for fear of losing any of it, but i excitedly opened it up once i got home, and it was so much fun! included within lots of beads and little goodies were three magnetic poetry strips that say "smooth" "pink" "velvet", several little charms, including a skeleton, a web with spider dangling down, and a woman symbol, a handful of little flower patches that remind me of doll clothes i had as a child, and so much more.

once again, i've been neglecting my blog.... but this time i have a good reason - i've been so damn busy!

last weekend my friend miranda (vanillaxlight on craftster.org) flew into seattle, and i drove down. i picked her up and we continued on to portland, where we met up with pam (kittykill on craftster.org) and her hubby mark, and angie (taloola on craftster.org) and her hubby durin. we spent two days running around seeing the sights (sights=craft stores!) and doing obscene amounts of craft supply shopping (or maybe that was just me?). after many good times packed into just a few days, on monday we drove back up to canada, and miranda spent the week here with me. last night my dad and i drove her back down to seattle for her 6am flight. (thank god he decided to come with us - i was SO tired from all of our shopping and junk food eating adventures!)

lots of picture were taken, and i'm sure some will be posted here, as well as pictures of some of my crafty purchases! but not right now, i'm still recovering from the all night drive!

in the meantime, i will mention that lisa volltrath is doing another holiday countdown. this one is a bit longer than some, and includes st patrick's day and easter. not particularily my favourite holidays (i hate how damn pastel easter stuff is!), but images are always fun and good!
the link is here - http://countdown.tentwostudios.com/

i also made a vinyl bag while miranda was here, so i'll be posting pics of that as well.
