a bit of a catch up post

my poor neglected blog....


i'm having a hard time getting back into blogging. december, january and february were all pretty tough months, between family drama, flare ups, loss, dental surgery and the worst flu ever, and even though things are looking up now that we're into march, i can't get back into the rhythm. (side note - rhythm is such a weird word, it's missing a vowel..)


part of the difficulty is that i'm addicted to instagram , where i get to post quick pics and get almost-immediate feedback. taking real pictures, editing them and then blogging them is so much more effort!


so maybe i need to combine the two? blogging and instagram? let's try that.


apologies to folks also on instagram for the repetition, but here are a few of the things i've been working on lately -


i've made a few pieces like this, i need to bind the second one and take proper pictures of them both this week...



a belated stocking stuffer for my mom, a needlebook using the tutorial i posted a few months ago. i didn't get it done before xmas because i couldn't find any cat fabric in my stash!



a bee block for Berene, very late, of course... she should never have said "no rush"!



i got kind of obsessed with this block, which everyone calls the Japanese + and x block, because the obsession was started when amy of badskirt shared the block from a quilt she saw at a show, and blogged a tutorial for it. it's actually dated back to 1938 and is attributed to Nancy Cabot, but Japanese + and x block stuck! it became an instagram sensation a little while ago, and as you can see by the flickr group, there are tons of gorgeous versions.



because i have a tendency to make things more complicated than they have to be, i resized the pattern and made 3.5" blocks using scraps. the original tutorial is for a 7.5" finished block, and tutorials are available for 12.5" x 12.5" finished, 10" x 10" finished, 12" x 12" finished, another 12" x 12" finished block, and a 24" x 24" finished block, which has slightly different dimensions (i think the 12" blocks have different dimensions too).



i signed up for the Lucky Stars BOM with Elizabeth from Don't Call Me Betsy, and i've managed to get one block finished so far. we're only three months into the year, so i'm not THAT behind. yet.



during QuiltCon i saw someone post about selvedge spool blocks, and got carried away. it was awesome to finally use some of my selvedges, but damned if i know what i'm going to do with the finished piece.



this will eventually be a pillow, but i'm only working on it in fits and starts. one of the bee blocks that i need to work on is star themed, so i started looking for star patterns, and fell in love with this one. i decided to "test" the pattern before i used it for a bee block, using some of my favourite prints.



this is the bee block - rainbow stars! it went a million times faster than my test piece - i cut all the fabric at once, pieced it all in sections, and now i just have to finish sewing the pieces together.



i've also quilted the front of the pillow that i'm making for my dad - a belated christmas present. i found the backing fabric last night, so i'll do that next.



and then there's Madrona Road Challenge! i got the top finished, and i need to pick up some white batting so that i can quilt it. i have a week to get it done!

WIP Wednesday

look at me, writing posts! you've obviously noticed by now that when i get really stressed out, anxious or depressed, i stop blogging. keeping up is just one more thing to overwhelm me, but i really miss it, and it's always a relief when things calm down enough for me to get back into it.


(i've been blogging for more than 5 years now. wow, huh? i totally missed my five year anniversary a few months ago - maybe i'll get myself organized before i hit my 500th post!)


one of the things that i've missed about blogging was the weekly WIP post. i don't like listing all of my WIPs, cause hello, overwhelming, but i do like to keep myself on track, and show pictures of my in progress projects and see what everyone else is up to.


this week's big WIP is, of course, my Kona Modern Quilts challenge projects. i have a large quilt partially quilted, a finished baby top to be sandwiched and quilted, a English Paper pieced pillow top that i'm not sure will ever be finished, a planned pillow that i purchased the fabric for but now can't find, and an art piece that i was stalled on until i picked up a supply item on monday. i'm hoping to at least get the two quilts and the art piece finished by the FVMQG december meeting, you can tell i had more ideas than time!


this is the large quilt when i first started quilting it, with my freezer paper templates all in place.


and here's a snippet of the baby quilt - i'll save the full reveal until after i've sandwiched and quilted it. plus, i promised my mom that if she held it up while i took a picture of it, i wouldn't show anyone her pjs, so it had to be cropped!



in addition to the challenge pieces, the BIG project of the moment is finishing up the tutorials for Got Craft items, and then making tons of the actual items to sell! i've a large pile of pincushions and needlebooks waiting for buttons, thanks to lovely guild members, and i'm planning on a bundle of the Gift Card Holders. oh, and keychains.... and maybe a few more pincushions... and lanyards....



and once the Got Craft goodies are finished, i NEED to get caught up on bee blocks, as i'm getting ridiculously behind, and then there are holiday swap items and christmas gifts, and an example for FVMQG's first block lotto. crap, i think i just overwhelmed myself again!

WIP Wednesday again!

i haven't made any progress on my Spinning Stars quilt-a-long.

or the two bee blocks that i need to do.

i've been working on some of these cute little fabric bowls, but they kinda take awhile. i hate hand sewing, so i'm doing it in short bursts

and i forgot to take pictures of pincushions, though i've finished a bunch of them!


but i did put together a pattern for a little baby quilt this morning.



the background will be a mixture of solid white and white on white prints. the colours aren't set in stone, they'll all be tone-on-tones, and i figured i'd pull from my stash...

and then i went to the fabric store this afternoon! (i needed buttons, it was a valid trip. really.)

we all know how much i love tone-on-tones, right?


they were on sale, and obviously needed to be added to my stash. right? right.


my biggest WIP at the moment is my tote from Sonja of Artisania's Paperpiecing 101 class last weekend. i am SOOOOOOO close to being done, cross your fingers that i'll get it done by tomorrow's guild meeting!



i kind of want to make a quilt of gnomes in all different sizes, all with stripey legs. just so that i can make more stripey socked gnomes. it's pretty awesome, isn't it? wait 'til you see the rest of the bag!

WIP Wednesday

i have very little to report for WIP Wednesday.

i haven't gotten much accomplished the last few weeks, fatigue has been seriously kicking my ass. if i'm not sleeping, i'm wishing i was sleeping! i'm trying to keep myself on a regular sleep schedule, which means that i'm often awake when my body/mind want to sleep, and i'm pretty useless in that state. i've been doing a lot of mindless pinning.....



i do have lots of WIPs at the moment, as usual. in fact, i have so many WIPs that i'm kind of scared to list them!


my big WIP at the moment is that i decided to join in on Katy of Monkey Do's Spinning Stars
(pdf) quilt-a-long. i know, i know, don't i already have enough projects on my plate? but it's so pretty!

there are some amazing fabric combinations in the flickr group, and Katy's quilt is going to be oh-so-fabulous in Field Study (with leopard print rings!), but i decided that the web like centre of the blocks obviously made this the perfect halloween quilt... right? i'm so excited!

i hauled out my halloween fabric stash, and so far i've cut all of the A and B pieces for 9 blocks. (sadly, it barely made a dent in my stash...) i'm hemming and hawing on the C pieces, because i'm using the same fabric for all of them, so it seems silly to cut 8 pieces for each star. doesn't it? it just seems like a lot of unnecessary seams! i'm trying to decide what i'm going to do instead.

i've only sewn together one block, so i need to get going on the rest of them. however, i HAVE been sewing with the scraps leftover after i did all of that cutting!



remember last year's halloween blocks? or what about the year before? yes, once again, we're doing a halloween block lotto at VMQG. yay! can you believe that this will be our 3rd year doing this? (our guild is growing up!)

today i sewed my scraps together and made blocks for this year's block lotto. the last two years i've had mine done really early to use as examples/demos at our September guild meeting, but this year i couldn't get it together in time for the meeting (blegh, fatigue). however, Felicity had an awesome example, a mini quilt top she made using the blocks she won last year!

this year's guidelines are the same as last year - make halloween themed blocks that are multiples of six inches finished. so that could be 6.5"x6.5", 12.5"x12.5", 6.5"x18.5", etc. two of my blocks are 12.5"x12.5" and four are 6.5"x6.5", but i think i'm going to keep one of them for myself, so that'll be 5 blocks for the lotto.

i've also been obsessed with pincushions, and have about 10 in varying stages of completion. i'm making halloween pincushions just for the hell of it, as well as sewing themed ones for a craft fair that VMQG is participating in later this year. i work on them assembly line, which works well, but means that i don't feel very accomplished until they're all finished, and then i feel REALLY accomplished!

i did finish one of the halloween pincushions, because i wanted to test the pattern. i can't decide if i like it, i might change the dimensions a bit for the rest of them. it was unexpectedly really hard to sew the circle perfectly, not sure what that was about.

in addition to that, VMQG is participating in a pincushion swap that the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild is coordinating, so i spent one fatigue-addled day searching around the internet for pincushion tutorials and pinning them. if you're looking for a pincushion tutorial - here you go! there are 271 pins in that board, and the majority of them are linked to tutorials. i think i can safely say that i've seen all of the pincushions on all of the internet!

WIP Wednesday - the rainbows and linen edition

you know when you're making something and you totally fall in love with it? every once in awhile you stop sewing to admire it and congratulate yourself on the perfect idea or the perfect fabric combination?


that was me this week. i am SO in love with how one of my swap pouches is turning out!! i'm so happy that the image i had in my head is visualizing in front of me, and i freaking love how the fabrics are interacting with each other. we all know that this doesn't happen with every project we undertake, but damn, it's awesome when it does. interestingly, every time i've felt this way it was regarding a project that i'd made with coloured linen. that's a sign, right?





so pretty!! i have to say that modern quilting has totally opened me back up to rainbows. despite growing up in the 80s, i was never super into them, because primary colours weren't my thing. i went through a brief phase in my teens of being into the pride rainbow, but even then, i tended to do things like craft my own pride jewelery out of muted shades. after that phase, i was seriously freaking tired of pride stuff, and it didn't always align with my politics, so i avoided rainbows. (thinking back, i do sort of miss my rainbow cat window decal...)





quilting has given me the excuse to buy and use fabrics in colours that i would NEVER wear, and honestly, how could anyone resist the cheerfulness of a rainbow? it just looks so happy and the colours are so harmonious. when i saw that this partner liked some of the rainbow projects floating around flickr land, i was excited for the excuse to make one!


i tried using something different for this project, and i'm curious what y'all have to say about it. i've heard people rave about fusible batting before, so when it was on sale at the fabric store, i thought i'd pick some up. i figured if nothing else, i'd have some white batting for my stash, i keep needing it at inopportune times.





however.... see that picture above? see the darker spots? meh. now i know to avoid the sections of the batting that seem to have excess glue, or, as i did here, use that side for the back. i realize that the linen i was using is super thin, but is this normal? what brand of fusible batting have you used, or where have you bought it? do you find that the adhesive is consistent? feedback welcome, please!



WIP-wise, i've got a ton of stuff on the go right now. the pouch above has just been completed, and my second pouch is soooooo close to being done. it's been delayed until i dig my magic eraser out and clean off my iron. TIP: when you're trying to clean fusible residue off your iron, don't use a cloth with a plastic tag on it, that just makes it worse. FYI!


i'm also making a smaller item to go inside each of the pouches, one of which is finished. i need to have them both done by tomorrow's guild meeting, which is actually doable - except for everything else i want to do too! i've made myself a list and it's prioritized, so as long as i don't get distracted reading Dear Prudence again (so addicted!), it's all under control.


i was hoping to make a totebag for a door prize, but that's a bit lower on the list. and i haven't even started the VMQG modern block that was this month's challenge, but oh well. as long as i get the important stuff done, and then i can just go and enjoy our anniversary meeting!

WIP Wednesday - the pouches and improv edition

look at me, writing a WIP Wednesday post on WEDNESDAY!



unfortunately, i don't have much to report! i think i mentioned recently that i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by things that need to be done in the next few weeks, but i think if i sit down and actually figure out what needs to be done by when, instead of just thinking "i'll never get anything done in time, i might as well just play bejeweled until i feel less stressed...", it'll all be less overwhelming.


so basically, today's post is really more about me than you...


first of all, i have one more bee block to get caught up on for the Unscripted Bee. i made my blocks (two, actually), and then i got stalled on my signature block and the improv block made out of the extra fabric. that needs to be done ASAP.

also for the Unscripted Bee, june is my month! it kind of snuck up on me (it's june, what??), but i know what i want to do, and i've played around with options a bit, so now i need to buckle down and make a sample, so that i can write out the instructions and send out my packets of fabric. that also needs to be done ASAP!

for the Fab Bee, i need to finish Holly's block, but since i'll be giving it to her at our next exec meeting, which is next week, i have a few days to get it done.

as for the June Fab bee block, the fabric was just mailed yesterday, and i have until the end of June to get it sent back, so it's not as super duper urgent.

and for yet another block, i'd really like to get our VMQG challenge block finished before our meeting. it's going to be in our guild logo colours, similar to the QuiltCon block challenge, and since this month's meeting is our TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY, we really want to get as many awesome modern blocks done for the meeting as we can.

that's a lot of improv, isn't it?! definitely a reoccurring theme.


i've also got a pouch theme going on, with pouches to start, pouches in progress, and pouches to post, as evidenced by Sunday's post.

i posted a whole long list of tutorials on the VMQG blog the other day, complete with some inspirational eye candy, so that's done, thank goodness!

now to decide on which techniques to actually use.....

i have two partners in the swap, so i've got two pouches to make. i've got one of them figured out, and i'm super excited to start on it, but i need to figure out what i'm going to do for the other one. they both need to be done by the June VMQG meeting too.


and in non-improv or pouch news, i've finished the top for the quilt that i posted in my last WIP post, the grey prints with yellow linen. the back needs to be pieced, because it's about 3" too narrow, so that's the next step.

i also have a belated embroidery project that i'm working on when i'm not up to sewing, and i need to thread in all the ends on the back of my Ace of Hearts Mini Quilt


SPEAKING OF WHICH, HAVE YOU VOTED YET? please go vote, it doesn't have to be for me! though that would be nice, if you want to!



i also have a ton of computer stuff and e-mails to get caught up on (i'm sorry Holly! and Arita! and everyone else!), so i'm definitely busy.



however..... i'm really really hoping to carve out some time to play with my new toy....



an Elna Supermatic!!!!

isn't it pretty? it's even got the little bakelite bobbin and accessories holder! (but not the super cute oil can - oh well)

i'm so excited about it. i totally did NOT need another Elna, but i don't care, i love these machines. (i love them so much that i'm planning on a tattoo that'll include one!) it's still down in my car, and i keep forgetting to check the serial number to see when it was made, but this model came out in 1954. it's commonly called an Elna Grasshopper, though technically, i think the grasshopper was the first model, the one before this one. i actually prefer the aesthetics of this model, it's a bit curvier. and it still has the same awesome case, that turns into a table to sew on. really! i think it'll be awesome for quilting, to have such a large surface.

WIPs and the week

whew, what a week!

yesterday was the last day to submit your nominations for The Blogger's Quilt Festival. did you get yours in? did you even manage to get through all of the AMAZING quilts?

i've had a rough week, feeling pretty crummy, so the eyecandy was a welcome distraction. i checked out all 621 quilts! i didn't comment as much as i would've liked, since i wasn't thinking super clearly, but as i came across quilts that i loved, i popped the link into a word file along with a mini description, and i'm hoping to get back to them as i have more time. it was REALLY REALLY hard to narrow them down!

some of the categories were tough too. it's hard to imagine size out of context! is it a baby quilt, a mini quilt? a lap quilt or a bed quilt? i'm super excited to see which quilts were nominated the most, but i feel so bad for Amy, having to straighten all that out this weekend. i'm sure there are going to be tons of quilts nominated in each section, there were just SO MANY amazing quilts!

i haven't decided on my "viewer's choice" quilt though. maybe i should just list all of my faves and draw a number or something!


and then it was Sew Mama Sew Giveaway week too! did you enter many? did you win anything? i honestly didn't really bother. i thought about doing a giveaway, but knew i wasn't up to responding to all of the comments, and i just decided to skip it. i entered a few giveaways, from blogs that i follow anyway, but i skipped most of those too. i always want to leave real comments (because i babble as much in comments as i do here), and if i don't have the time or the energy, it's not worth it. but hopefully i'll be prepared in advance and up to the next one!


in other news, jeez, am i behind! ohmygoodness, it feels like i have a lot of things to get done by the end of the month, and then by the middle of the month. i started thinking about a WIP (work in progress) Wednesday post, and just listing it all out in my head totally stressed me out.

but i did take a few WIP pictures, so i might as well share them, right?



a current quilt project that i need to finish ASAP!



and what my table has been looking like lately - bag making supplies! all sorts of closures! how many different kinds can you count? we'll see who was paying the most attention during my little talk at the last VMQG meeting! i'm hoping to get some bag examples blogged this week.




i'm off today to meet up with some quilty friends, and i'm awfully excited!

i was voluntold to bring my awesome/amazing/fabulous gluten-free cupcakes, which is no biggie, though yesterday was a lot busier than i thought it would be. but i figured i'd make them just before bed and ice them in the morning... as i was making them, i was thinking, jeez, this batter isn't really going far... i doubled the recipe and i'm still only getting 16 cupcakes. hmm, i must have made them fuller than i thought...

and then as i was tidying up the kitchen, i glanced at the bag of sugar and thought "oh shit"

i forgot the sugar! the recipe always looks runny, and i don't taste it as i'm making it cause it tastes nasty (the apple cider vinegar, i think), so i totally didn't realize until it occurred to me that i didn't remember opening the bag! whoops.

so i made another batch. at least they'll be appreciated!

i haven't been posting much, as you can tell, and i haven't decided if i should post about not posting or not... hm, i'll keep thinking about that. i definitely have a backlog of finished quilts to post! in the meantime, here are pics of projects i've been working on the last few days.


if you know me at all, you must have known that i'd be obsessed with this fabric. i was just waiting for Spool of Thread get it in, and now i want to put typewriters on EVERYTHING I OWN. seriously.



what do you think it is? it's a secret till it's done!



i tried making pincushions today. i was so proud of myself that i actually knew where a glue gun was, but of course, it didn't really work anyway. glue guns never work, honestly. do you use glue guns? eugh. i prefer glue like goop, or silicone sealant, but my goop was all dried up and i have no idea where my silicone is.





when i come across neat mugs, i pick them up to make pincushions out of, and then i never get around to it. they'll be fun door prizes for guild., once i pick up some more glue!





i put some fancy rocks into the bottom of the mug to weigh it down. partly cause that orange one above is rather top heavy, and partly because i find that pincushions have a tendency to slide off the table right when you need them to stay. you could use anything, really, but i found those at the dollar store by my house.

i put something else at the bottom of the mug, below the rocks. magnets! it's handy when you drop pins, or if you have a hard time picking up tiny things.





i love this mug. isn't it cute? i bought it ages ago and it's been sitting on my counter ever since. my sister tried to tell me that it's an easter mug cause the little girl is collecting eggs, but upon further inspection, i think she's full of crap.





what do you think is in the little girl's basket? i think she's collecting mushrooms, not eggs. the yellow one has a stem! those are mushrooms, right?

WIP Wednesday and Stress, Stress, Stress

i started to write a post, and it turned into a whole long page of ranting, and i thought, you guys don't want to read that, i don't even want to read it!


so short form (well, as short as i can get) - the grandma that i originally went out to visit in the hospital was doing well, but the day she was released, my other grandma fainted for the second time in 5 days, so we took her to the hospital. she shouldn't really be on her own at the moment, but the hospital sent her home after one night because they needed the bed and because my uncle was supposed to stay with her, but then he decided that she was fine and went back to work, so i've come back out here to stay with her for a few weeks. i'm the oldest in my family, and the oldest grandchild on both sides, so care often falls to me, and given my health stuff and my disability status, everything thinks i'm free to handle it, whether it's true or not!

my dad and i were supposed to come out together, but he was stuck way up north in a mining camp where the satellite phone costs $12.50 a minute for over a week, so i had to wait for him. the roads were terrible, it was storming, the friend he was with had to be taken by ambulance to the closest hospital, 10 or 15 hours away (very very remote!), andf it was generally a giant pain in the ass. they finally made it home on friday, thank goodness, and after a few days of scrambling to get things done, we left home and headed out east.

in addition to all of the above, i'd also had a plumbing nightmare which no one in the building seemed to know what to do about, and the guy who lives above me refused to stop using his kitchen pipes because it wasn't "his problem", so one day he ran his dishwasher and flooded my kitchen purposely. so then i had to empty out my entire kitchen before i left, including furniture, and find room elsewhere in my apartment for my refrigerator, because my kitchen floor has to all be pulled up, "biowashed", whatever that means, and relaid while i'm away.

ao basically, i've been super stressed for weeks now, and i'm massively behind on a million things. i had my Trim the Tree Swap ornaments finished before the deadline, but didn't manage to mail them until they were a week late. (but they're mailed now!! yay!!) i have the potholder swap between VMQG and FVMQG to start and finish asap, and i'm behind on my blocks for the Unscripted bee, as well as lots of other little projects (like Habitat, which is totally late). i haven't caught up on blogs in ages, and i have tons of e-mails and messages to respond to. i tried to switch over to the e-mail client on my laptop, since i have it with me here, but for some reason it'll receive e-mails but can't send them, but i'm going to ignore that issue for the night!




but would you like to see something i've been working on? since this is supposed to be WIP Wednesday, not Whining Wednesday?

i started working on these at the beginning of our trip, and by the time i arrived tonight, i had 35 done. slow, yes, but i slept a lot on the way out here too! i printed out a few sheets of hexagon templates before i left, (from the first link on this page) and have been puttering away. i'm not sure if i have too many or too few, but i'll start laying them out tomorrow and i'll figure that out then. for now, i'm just admiring the little pile i here beside me, with their cfrisp little folds and corners. aren't they pretty?

not much to update for WIP wednesday!

hello blogland!


so, what's new? what did i miss? i highly doubt i'll manage to get caught up right away, so if you posted something fun that you think i should see, pop me an e-mail, kay?


like i said in my last post, i've been away. i actually stayed with relatives who have internet for part of my trip, but i didn't find much time for the computer. i visited one grandma in the hospital most days, did a little bit of thrifting, spent time with most of my relatives, but especially an aunt and uncle that i don't usually get to see much of, ignored my grandfather's incessant nagging and grouchiness, went to a mini reunion with second and third cousins who i haven't seen in years, searched my grandma's house for family photos to scan, and on the day that i was supposed to leave, took my other grandma to the hospital, rescheduled our flights, and sat there all day waiting for test results. it was an eventful trip!

i also managed to sew quite a bit, which is really the biggest reason why i didn't use the computer - when i wasn't spending time with family or sleeping, i was sewing. i tried one grandma's machine, which was an annoying singer that was high shank and took weird bobbins, so none of my supplies would work, plus it had crappy tension, then i hauled my other grandma's machine out of the basement, an old kenmore that will probably work well if it was serviced, but is all seized up now, and finally borrowed a cheapy brother from one of my aunts. it was very basic, and occasionally skipped stitches, but was my best bet by far.

i finished up my ornaments for the Trim The Tree Ornament Swap on flickr, and a few others beside, and i'll post them soon. i'm going to go mail them tonight. i also started on a mini quilt, and worked on a couple of hand work projects, but none of them are finished yet. which is okay, because today's wednesday, which means WIP Wednesday!

this is one of the hand projects that i'm still working on -




before i left, i was working on a tree skirt for my parents, based on Monica Solorio-Snow of Happy Zombie's tutorial/quiltalong posted on Sew Mama Sew back in october. i have the top finished, and need to spray baste it. it's made using a vintage holiday tablecloth, and red linen, so i think it needs the added stability of spray basting.



i'm pretty happy with it so far, and impatient to finish it up.



i had a few finishes before i left, the Bleach Discharge Bats wall quilt, and my Outfoxed "Improv is Foxy" quilt. as for the rest of my WIPs.... nothing to report!!



as for recent finishes, i plotted out a quilt today. i started doing it on the plane, but got tired of the guy in front of me leaning back and making it impossible to open my laptop entirely! i finished it up this afternoon after a nap in my own bed with my Sofie-bean (sooo good!).
