sticks and stones can break my bones

this is my second piece for the craftster.org needlework "good cause" challenge. it's actually my back up piece, in case i didn't finish the never ending needlepoint piece. it's good, because i totally didn't!

i embroidered this first because it's something that i want to hang in my house. i want to remind myself, and to remind others in my life, that words can be as incredibly hurtful as other kinds of abuse, and to take care.

i remember as a kid, the phrase "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me". i sincerely hope kids aren't still learning that, but when i was a kid, we didn't talk about bullying and the cruelty of children. when i started school, my dad told me that if a boy bothered me "punch him in the nose" (i don't think i ever did, though as i grew older, i realized a groin shot would be more effective anyway! ;)) but we never learned how to deal with the emotional cruelty, you know?

i was a super sensitive kid, i cried at EVERYTHING, and got teased all the time, and even more so when i started to cry! it got to the point that by my early teens, i'd trained myself to never cry in front of anyone else - even if it was totally acceptable (like a sad movie). i don't really know how things would have been any different if we'd talked more about it in the 80s, but i wonder.

i really wanted to embroider this piece for the domestic violence theme because i think emotional abuse can sometimes be overlooked. i think survivors of emotional abuse are often the first ones to do that. i was in a common law relationship for several years that was really messed up, when i look back on it now. it took me over a year to stop hearing my ex's voice in my head putting me down, even though i realized soon after we split that it wasn't really ME thinking those things. friends have come out and called the relationship abusive, but i still shy from that. i don't think he was intentionally trying to hurt me or to control my actions, i think he had a lot of his own emotional problems, and we were really unsuited. is it still abuse if it isn't intentional? i'm also uncomfortable calling it abuse because it doesn't seem "as bad" as other people's stories of physical or sexual abuse, which i know is totally contradictory to what i'm saying here. but that's how it goes, you know? rationally, i know that emotional abuse can leave long reaching scars, and for some people, may be more damaging than other kinds of abuse. but emotionally it's a different story.

coming out of the relationship i realized that both my physical and mental had been affected by the relationship, and even now, years later, i still struggle with things that go back to that period in my life.

so this is what i embroidered
IMG_7016

the words are a simple font, i wanted them to look almost childlike. (i'll edit this with the actual name later, i have to look it up!) they're simple backstitch, and the heart is satin stitch with two different shades of pink.

once again, comments and criticism are totally welcome, and the pics are on flickr, so if you'd like to see them bigger, just click on them.

the deceptive beauty of breast cancer

it's been pretty quiet lately, huh? that's cause everything i've been working on has been secret!

over on craftster, kittykill announced the october needlework challenge, the Good Cause Challenge. i immediately decided to make a piece or two, and this is the first one. i've been waiting not so patiently for the 18th, thinking that entries could be posted then, only to realize today that i COULD have posted this back on the 12th! thank goodness i checked tonight, because today was the last day to enter!

my original plan for this piece was an anatomical image of a breast with a lump, much like the pregnancy anatomical image i embroidered a few months ago. breasts are incredibly complex, and i love all the lines that make up the images.

i started googling for images, and ran across an entirely different anatomical image - the breast cancer cells themselves. though i continued searching for the breast images, i kept coming back to the cells. they were so BEAUTIFUL, and i was really challenged by the idea of a more 3-D needlework piece, since i usually work on flat surfaces of fabric.

i started thinking about how as a society we idealize beautiful breasts, regardless of what may be hidden inside them. a pair of slightly droopy mom of 3 breasts are seen as less beautiful and less valued than a pair of young perky 20 year old breasts, regardless of actual health. you usually can't tell from the surface if someone has breast cancer, which is why self exams are so important.

and this is what i came up with.

bc1

this ended up being smaller than i'd originally planned, because gathering up the bobbles took WAY more fabric than i'd anticipated! i bought half a metre of fabric, about 19", and the piece ended up being 5.5" tall and 10" or 11" wide. i used a stretch velvet because i wanted that slight sheen, the variance in tone dependent on light, that velvet has. i used sewing thread to hand stitch circles on the fabric, then pulled them up tight and stuffed them with fiberfill. i didn't have any fiberfill, but i did have a pillow form - this piece took almost all of a 12"x12" pillowform's stuffing! it took a really really long time, so much longer than i'd anticipated!

after i had all the cells complete, i hand basted the velvet onto a piece of cotton, basting between the cells to keep the surface consistent (the cells had a tendency to pop out everywhere!).

i used dmc tapestry wool, colour 7896, for the french knots. i printed out the image and took it with me when i went shopping, and this was the closest i could get between dmc and anchor. i looked at embroidery floss, and at the possibility of using beads instead of the french knots. the embroidery floss was too shiny, and would have made knots that were smaller in proportion to the cells than i wanted, and the same thing went for the beads.

because i was using wool, but working with a fabric that i would need to pierce, i used chenille needles that were thick enough to thread the wool onto, but sharp enough to pierce the fabric (unlike typical needlepoint needles).

i find french knots easy (don't throw stuff at me! i'm sorry!! ;D), so that part of it was fine, but getting the wool through the "cells" was a whole different story! after an evening that left me with severely bruised and callused fingers, i dug out my locking pliers and used them to get the needle through. in some areas it was going through countless layers of fabric and fiberfill, the gathering of the bubbles/cells created a lot of excess fabric around the bases of them!

bc3

with the flash, the colour is a little less accurate. it looks more blue here than green.

and the back, with the title stem stitched across.
bc6
i had bought all the skiens of tapestry wool that my local needlework shop had, and used the majority of them for the front. i decided to use a lighter shade for the words, so that i could do as many french knots on the front as possible!

i also did a little flower design, to tie the two purple shades together and to add detail to the upper and lower portions. i used french knots there as well, and back stitch for the curlicues.
bc5
i'd like to do more french knots on the sides, the areas that aren't visible from the front, once my local needlework shop gets in more wool of this colour.

after both sides were done, i machine stitched the two long sides of the pillow. i had to use my sister's industrial machine, mine refused to stitch it! i stuffed the pillow, and ended up hand stitching the short ends because it was impossible to get the sewing machine foot close enough to the bubbles/cells.

Pendants -Plastic Deer and Embroidered Leather!

i realized that i never got around to posting these, so i thought i'd do it now, while things are kinda boring around here, with me away!

these were for a pendant swap on craftster.org, oh, a while ago now. i signed up to send two pendants, and did two pretty different styles!

the deer pendants were for the smaller group of us who were sending and receiving the extra pendants, and other than trying to chose colours that i thought the other swappers would like, i didn't really cater to them as much. these were so much fun!

remember the pieces i worked in the michael de meng class? one of them had a mounted deer attached to her chest? i really really loved how that looked, and couldn't resist making these pendants.

the deer were REALLY hard to find, way harder than i'd expected! i looked around online a bunch, and finally ordered some, but i wasn't sure they'd arrive in time, so i found a cake decorating place out in langley that had them as well. it was good that i did, since the ones i ordered online were smaller than i'd expected!

i chopped the heads off with my handy dandy dremel, and then glued them onto the backgrounds. i had a pile of deer bodies out on my deck for ages afterwards!

they were incredibly difficult to photograph, as you can tell.....

for the other set, which was going to everyone in the swap, i made embroidered leather pendants. these were a lot of fun, because i try to find a design for each swapper that i thought they'd like. the leather was all recycled, from purses and clothing, and after the embroidery's done i glue another piece of leather onto the back and cut them out.

i hope you like them! the swappers definitely seemed to.

i'm still in manitoba, and will be for a few more weeks. i went thrifting a bit on saturday and got some incredible finds (vintage embroidery patterns!! filmstrips!!), and yesterday i headed into winnipeg to visit my grandma in the hospital again, and then met up with a friend. we had a great visit, and went to the MOST AMAZING FABRIC STORE EVER! i took pictures, and bought way too much, but that'll have to wait until i have high speed internet again!

Craftster folks ROCK!!

oh, i am so so late posting this. so so late.

a little while ago i got an AWESOME surprise in the mail! the amazing twiztidblood organized a bunch of craftster members (all folks who've been in ATC swaps that i've organized) and they all got together and sent me ATCs and good wishes! it was SO INCREDIBLE of them. honestly, i was all teary eyed when i opened the envelope, it was such an amazing thing for twiz to organize, and for people to send me their love like that.

twiz sent me multiple goodies, and i actually missed two things in these pics - a note card and a sticker.

she sent me this pretty feathered bird card/page
from twiztidblood

and this gorgeous koi page/card
from twiztidblood

and fabulous ephemera, and the ribbon that everything was wrapped in (i was too impatient to take pics while it was all still wrapped!)
from twiztidblood

that alone would have been an awesome surprise!

but there was also this fabulous ATC from spookshowbaby
from spookshowbaby
(i love that it's a woman LATCH HOOKING! how awesome is that?)

and this beautiful ATC from karin_, who also sent some awesome ephemera along
from karin
(aren't the colours fabulous? i love the pink!)

and a whole BUNCH of ATCs from audio-astrophysics!
from audio-astrophysics
(such an awesome picture, i love her! she looks so proud of her somewhat creepy muscles!)

from audio-astrophysics
(two amazing amazing and truthful quotes!)

from audio-astrophysics
(at first glace, it's a pretty card, but when you read the words... ha! i love the contrast!)

from audio-astrophysics
(lookit how sassy she is! and those gloves are incredible, i totally want them!)

and a fabulous acrylic card from SewHelpMe
from sewhelpme
(i love her acrylic cards! and rhinestones always make me happy!)

such an awesome get well/thinking of you package, and it honestly meant so much to me. i have the ATCs in my binder, all on their very own page so that i can look at them all together.

i haven't been on craftster very much lately, and i've been missing it and all the swappers and my mod girls, but i just haven't been able to handle it. i'm having a really hard time focusing and getting things accomplished in general, always feeling like i'm so behind that i'll never catch up, and as much as i love it, craftster's the worst for it. i'm at the point now where i can have ONE focus per day, that's it, whether it's posting here, making a phone call, going to the grocery store, whatever, just ONE thing, or else i get all flustered and overwhelmed and anxious. there are too many aspects to craftster - i get all stressed out about swaps, about mod duties, about keeping up with my swap friends and the mod girls, about actually posting things that i've made, etc, etc. so really the fact that i'm so late posting this is a prime example of why i can't handle craftster right now! it was so so amazing to receive this package full of love, and being told that i'm missed as much as i miss everyone myself.

i'm really glad that i'm finally posting these, i've been feeling really bad about the delay.

in other new, tomorrow is HANDMADE NATION!!!!!!!

i am so so so excited!

i was DETERMINED to make myself something new for it, because it's been oh so long since i've sewn for MYSELF! in addition, i realized that in all the years i've been working with vinyl, i've never made myself a purse. isn't that ridiculous? i've always just received them in swaps, or even, the horror, BOUGHT purses. but i did it!! i made myself a purse! i'll try to get pics up of it soon. and then, because i still had time before my sister came over for help with wedding skirts, i made myself a skirt! two, actually! (i'll only wear one at a time!). i have a huge stack of skirts and dresses waiting to be altered into skirts that fit me, and i managed to make/alter TWO of them today! one was very simple, just chopping off the top and adding elastic, but the other was more complicated and turned out super cute! obviously, sewing was today's focus! i definitely pushed too much, my back is currently screaming at me, but it was really nice to feel like i accomplished something. and now i have a non-boring purse and skirt to wear to the screening!

have i mentioned that i'm really really really excited about the handmade nation screening?!

i'm also really excited that the venue changed, because i was NOT looking forward to driving to the yuppie west side, i'm so happy that it's in east van, which is totally my comfort zone. that worked out really well, now i just need to find my copy of the book!

sparkly 3-D sacred heart challenge entry!

i missed thursday again!

this past week has felt so damn busy, time's just flown by! i decided to make myself be crafty, regardless of how i was feeling, which kind of backfired. i got a bunch of stuff done, but damn, i'm feeling it today!

one of the things i did was create an entry for the papercrafts challenge on craftster.org. i had my project all planned out, but didn't think i'd have time, so i wasn't going to enter. then racky got on my case, and started nagging... i'm so glad i did it, and i finished in the nick of time!

finished sacred heart 1

the challenge was called "chinese menu", and the idea was, like a chinese food menu, you could choose between various supply options in each category. you had to pick one thing from column A, and two things from column B. these were my options!

Column A
take out menu
newspaper
junk mail
old postcard

Column B
magazine or catalog
phone book
childrens' book
sheet music
advertisement flyer
brown paper bag

as soon as i saw the criteria for the challenge, and read newsprint, i thought papermache! that's what you do with newsprint! (i also used sheet music, phone book pages, and fliers)

keep in mind that i can remember only 2 papermache projects i've ever done in my life - a big pig shaped piggy bank in grade 5, that never dried and eventually they all got moldy and we threw them all out, and a giant 2.5' tall (yes, 2.5 feet!) boot that i made in high school, over 10 years ago now (i'm old, i know! ;D).

but i remembered the basics. i started out cutting a heart shape out of heavy duty cardboard, and crumpling up balls of newspaper. i used an excessive amount of masking tape, and taped all of the balls to the cardboard.
sacred heart step 1

then i hauled out the flour and water mixture and went to town!
sacred heart step 2
i was really trying to avoid pages with a lot of images or ads on them, so i ended up using the classifieds. this step took FOREVER to dry, i didn't think i'd get this done because of it! i would have liked to have done another layer or two, to even it out a bit, but there just wasn't time. of course, my sister told me the "put it in the oven" trick AFTER it was finally dried!

once it was dry i sanded it to get rid of the sharper edges of dried papermache, and painted it with watered down acrylic paint. i wiped off paint, so that you can still see the newsprint below.
sacred heart step 7
(i used Kroma cadmium dark red. kroma's a fabulous local paint manufacturer)

after the paint was dry, i sprayed the heart with a matte medium and sprinkled it with glitter. glitter makes EVERY project better! ;D
sacred heart step 8

then i started prepping the non-heart pieces!

i took a piece of cardstock and sprayed it excessively with walnut ink (tsukinek antiquing solution) on both sides. i wanted the brown shade to be mottled, so i rubbed the ink around with a piece of scrap fabric. once that was dry, i printed sheet music out on it that i'd found from google images. i didn't use any of the sheet music i already had, because i needed the paper to be sturdy, and because i needed it to be printed landscape for the extra length to fit around the heart. as it was, i had to join two 11" pieces for each twist.
sacred heart step 6
i cut the paper into 1/2" strips.

i ripped some pages out of our very old yellow pages for the flames, choosing to use the pages that listed churches and other places of worship. i thought that was fitting. i brushed the yellow pages with a watered down yellow paint (kroma arylide yellow).
sacred heart step 3

then i went through the fliers in the recycling bin and ripped out pictures that were red, yellow or orange in tone. they all ended up being from supermarket fliers, tomatoes, oranges and a beef roast!
sacred heart step 4

i brushed the flier images with a watered down combination of the red and yellow paints.
sacred heart step 5

once the flier images and the yellow pages were dry, i ripped them into slightly triangular shapes for the flames. i gathered them together and crunched them up, and used even more masking tape to attach them to the back of the heart.

then i sprayed the entire piece with a few layers of satin gloss.
sacred heart step 9
seriously, DON'T do this inside, even if it IS 2am!

once that was dry, i added the thorns/vines. i took the 1/2" strips of brown paper and started twisting each end in the opposite direction. because i didn't want to wait for glue to dry, i attached two stripe together with fiskars photo mounts! (it was 2am, okay?). i wrapped the sheet music vines around the heart, adhering them with yet more masking tape.
finished sacred heart 3

and then i sprayed the whole thing again, multiple times, with satin medium! i would have preferred gloss, actually, especially with the glitter (it really popped when the paint was wet!), but i can't find any in my disater of a studio!

and it was done!
finished sacred heart 2

hanging in my bathroom, where it was intended for!
finished sacred heart 1
finished sacred heart 4
(if you want to see more pics of my bathroom, there are some older ones here!)

so what do you think? i had a lot of fun making this, and i think i'd like to play around with papermache more. voting will start tomorrow! voting has started!
