Giveaway Time!!

wahoo! i promised a giveaway in my mail day post, and here it is! this is part of the May Giveaway Day on sewmamasew. she'll be adding a list of all the participating blogs once they're all confirmed, so be sure to go check them out!

(click on the picture to go to sewmamasew and see the lists of participating blogs!)

so here's the dealio -

the giveaway will be open from now until 11:59pm pacific time on Mat 31st, giving you lots of time to enter! the giveaway is open to folks from all countries, so feel free to enter even if you're not in north america.

comment on this post with an actual comment, constructive criticism, love, suggestions for vinyl applique images, whatever! just something more than just "pick me!", kay? make sure i have a way to contact you, or i'll have to pick someone else if you win!

you can get extra entries by tweeting about the giveaway and by blogging about it. please post separate comments (with links!) for each of those things, so that i make sure to count them!

you can also get up to 3 more entries by commenting on other posts here at glitter, vinyl and thread. no need to post more comments for these, i'll see them as they come in.

that's a total of 6 possible entries!!

i'll chose the winners either by a draw, or by using the generator thingy some folks use, we'll see. one or the other. i have a feeling there will be too many people to just put the names in one of my pretty pyrex bowls and draw one!

(edit - moderated posting is turned off! yay!)

so that's all fine and dandy, but what you're really thinking is "jeez, shut up amy, what can i win?", right?

it's a secret!

no really!

every day until May 31st i'm going to add another thing to the giveaway. it might be handmade, it might be supplies, it might be something vintage, you'll have to wait and see!

today's item is a Cheerful Bird Song Vinyl Pouch/Wristlet (may 27)
IMG_9879

this cute little wristlet is made of upholstery weight vinyl with a vintage new-old stock zipper and a heavy duty snap.

the body and strap of this bag are fantastic vintage dead stock vinyl that is variegated shades of emerald green and bright blue. the front of the bag has a cheerful little birdie appliqué made of several shades of blue vinyl, including glittery blue. the birdie is singing a sweet song, the music note is machine embroidered on a glittery blue bubble. the vintage zipper matches the blue, and adds a pop of colour to the top of the bag.

it works great as a hands-free purse, but it can also be snapped around the strap of a larger bag to keep your essentials close at hand (if you carry a never ending mary poppins bag like me!), or snapped around the towel bar in a small bathroom to hold toiletries.

the wristlet is aproximately 7.5" at the zipper, and 8" at the base. it's 2" deep and 5.5" tall, so it's the perfect size for your important stuff!

i hope you like it!

(and yes, i know i use an excessive amount of exclamation marks! i try to cut back, i really do!)

May 28- Today's item, which is late, i'm sorry, is a handmade apron constructed using a vintage pillowcase!

apron front bow
apron front

I finished the apron early this evening, but i wanted to get the tutorial up before i added it to the giveaway, and that took FOREVER! seriously, the tutorial probably took twice as long to make as the apron! (and technology is totally hating me today, apparently)

May 29th - Today's prize are this set of kitschy coasters. I've posted about them in more detail (and more pictures!) here, but a quick description -
the top layer is vintage cotton (with a super cute gingham and folkish design!) quilted to batting to absorb the moisture, and the bottom layer is a matching bright red vinyl, to keep the moisture from seeping through to your table.
green1

May 30th - Today there are TWO prizes! Both are fabric based, and i hope you liked them!

Prize 1 is a set of 3 vintage pillowcases. You can use them to make pillowcase aprons, use them on your bed, or take them apart and use them as regular fabric. I tried to get a bit of variety in the styles, so one is a more subdued but still funky floral print, one's a very 60s floral print, and one is a more traditional floral print. The green one is actually a homemade pillowcase, and has a seam down the back, but it will still work fine! (i tried to talk myself out of including it for that reason, cause i LOVE the fabric!)
3 vintage pillowcases

Prize 2 is a package that includes a vintage curtain, with plenty of fabric for sewing, 2 cards of vintage buttons, 2 vintage Lightning zippers, and 3 vintage wooden thread spools.

vintage fabric giveaway
The fabric itself is a synthetic and feels very sturdy, but is quite sheer. My idea for it was to interface it and use it to make a couple of nice sized totes, i think the colours are perfect for hot summer days!

vintage buttons and thread
I wouldn't recommend actually sewing with this thread, it's old enough that it will break very easily, but the wooden spools are very cool!

vintage lightning zippers
I LOVE the Lightning brand zippers!! I love vintage zippers in general, I use them for all of my vinyl, but Lightning is my favourite.

I was trying to get a papercrafting bundle put together, which will include the prize that Megan from the Upstart Crow passed along today, but it was taking forever. I have too much stuff to gather up for it! So tomorrow's prize (or prizes! i have a lot of stuff!) will be papercrafting themed. Don't forget to check back!

The last day's Prizes! May 31st!
As shown in this post, these prize bundles are BIG!

There are 2, with just minor differences
bundle 2
and
bundle 1

in addition, both prize bundles come with a fun and games bundle, a ledger sheet bundle, and a book pages bundle!

Thank you so much to everyone who's commented so far with awesome suggestions and ideas!

This is my first visit, I've come via SMS giveaway but I am loving your work and will definitely be back.
What would I like to see on one of your pieces? Even though you don't know him I have to say my Donkey character b/c he would look so fabulous in this medium.
I guess you have done pears already? Ummm...how about big bright parrot type birds?

Oh, my goodness that wristlet is amazing! Is the fabric actually a shimmer fabric? Oh, I just love it! Great colors and so fun! Your shop looks like a great one! I will have to check it out! I like to feature shops on my blog from time to time, so I will have to check yours out!

Emily Gusba said...

That is super cute. And what a cool giveaway idea! For applique ideas, I think an applique in white of birds on a wire (like, their silhouettes) on a black background would be awesome on a purse or a decorative pillow. Also, giraffes, or penguins!

Anonymous said...

A rubber ducky may be rather cliche but I think would cute as an applique. I little less cute would be guitars or perhaps lips, or maybe skull and cross bone with a bow?

I couldn't believe that I was the first one to post a comment, then I finally had the realization that since you have comment moderation on, I am probably not.

I am absolutely amazed at your designs. I have never used vinyl except as a tablecloth. Is it easy? Does it fray? I realize I am supposed to be leaving a comment not asking questions, but I am fascinated, and the questions keep coming. I will go back and read some of your other posts to see what you have said.

Thanks, Kami

I am loving your vinyl creations (checked you out on Etsy)- you have very good craftmanship. I've tried to sew vinyl before and, well, I couldn't sew straight if my life depended on it and vinyl doesn't hide anything. Might I suggest a wristlet with a hummingbird? Or maybe an octopus... only if you're looking for ideas. Lovely!

I love the layers you made with your birdie applique...the multiple pieces of leather, the embroidery. Such a neat way to add depth to whatever your making!

Wow! I didn't know there were so many beautiful things to do with vinyl! I looked at your shop and saw all your bags-so creative. I love the apron too, and your tutorial was awesome. All of the pictures help. I want to make an apron now!

affectioknit said...

Wow! What a great giveaway! Thanks! What a great tutorial on the apron too - I am so going to do that...

Your giveaway items are absolutely beautiful! I sympathize with how long it takes to put tutorials together as verus making the actual project- I once wrote a tutorial for a project that usually took me an hour or less, and it took me three days.

That apron is awesome. Where does one find such cool vintage pillowcases? Thrift stores like goodwill? That fabric is so cool!

Thanks for doing the giveaway!
I'm going to roam around your blog now because you have some pretty sweet stuff!

Holy Cow - Thank you Sew Mama Sew - this may be my new favorite blog! Such cute ideas and projects! (and the button obsession? - yeah me too!)

Malinda said...

I really like the way you have layered the colors of the bird on the wristlet.

Not a big fan of yellow - but the design on the coasters is prety.

Lisa said...

I checked out your Etsy store and my favorite vinal item is the wristlet with the birds. I love the colors and the birds are so cute!

I'd love to see some bicycles. What I really want is a set of panniers made out of vinyl for my bike, but a bag with bike appliques would be great.

Mary Ella said...

I love your tutes... It would be fun to see more of those. Also the anatomy of the pregnant woman you did was amazing!

You have great tutorials - I'm glad I found your blog! Ha! I like the fun of not knowing what you're giving away!

I like the fabric that your apron is made of. Thank you for the giveaway. I like how you post a variety of things, not just one kind of sewing project.

Well, hello! I'll just come right out and say it--I'm afraid of sewing with vinyl. But, I'm feeling inspired after browsing your stuff. I might just give it a try!

Suze said...

Aloha! What an awesome giveaway. Honestly, I would never have thought to use vinyl for a coaster backing. They look great. As for the apron, I would have never imagined that it was stripped from a pillowcase. Such great ideas! The pouch is cute too.

Kimberly said...

I am in love with that apron. I have very little vinyl sewing experience. I just made a the kids an i-spy bag once and that was it. I used my walking foot so I cannot imagine that would help with an applique.

Thanks for your generosity!

What a neat giveaway - my daughter loves the little bird and music note!
Thank you for doing a giveaway.

I am soooo coming back here again! I really need an apron, so your pillow into apron tutorial is just fantastic!! Thankyou so much for it, and the chance to win all these beautiful items!!

Wonderful site!! Love your work on vinyl, I'm still struggling a bit with it but won't give up! I love your tutorials and your christmas ornaments have got me thinking! I'm kind of wandering down a fourth of july theme but also cute flags with a clear vinyl for children to put pictures of their parents who are serving in our armed services! Thanks for all the inspiration! I'm a new follower now!

Poo! I think i might be too late to sign up. This is what you get for living in NZ and staying up to watch the FA Cup final in the middle of the night.
I've just sent a coaster to my mum, embroidery in a plastic casing. Much prefer your idea, Amy. May have to go out and find some vinyl to give it a go.

I can console myself by looking at the embroidery you sent me.

Hope you are feeling better

Jo

Great giveaway. I love the vinyl, I have never used it at all so I must read more of your blog and get some tips.

Ginny said...

I'm here late, so I read through your first page of posts & I'm really liking your blog a lot. Your button post got me, I have a weakness for them as well :)

Jo Ashcroft said...

I am so happy! I can't work out the time difference between NZ and the UK where my folks are so I have no chance with the US and Canada.

Just been tweeting about the Goddess of Craft- yes you Amy -https://twitter.com/jojobooster, if you need to check but I think you are following me already.

Oh and I really don't mind you stalking me!

Constructive criticisms - I have one. I love your designs and your funky little purses, but you don't list the size of the wrist strap. I have big fat arms, so I wouldn't buy any of them without knowing if it's going to actually fit on my wrist or not. If you were selling that pillowcase apron (awesome pillowcase!), I'd want to know the size of that, too.

Libby said...

In the words of Christoper Walken from SNL " I need more cowbell !"

No but seriously, your stuff is lovely and I couldn't come up with criticism. <3 <3 <3

amy dame said...

lilacsigil, that is SUCH a good point! i'm embarrassed by it, actually, because i know better! i purposely try to make the straps generous, for that very reason, but looking back through my sold listings, i've never put that in the description! that's definitely something i need to change, thank you!

Robin said...

I love all of the items. Seriously. Thanks for the inspirationa and eye candy. I might actually enjoy whipping up some nasty mac n' cheese if I could wear that apron while doing it.

Oh my goodness, that apron is lovely! And I understand the exclamation point problem--I have a similar one with the ellipse... Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!

This is an amazingly generous giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win =)

I think you should make a vinyl applique of a bicycle (I'm leaning towards the omafiets style of bike).

Wow, you have gorgeous stuff. I am totally diggin' the little birdies that are popping up everywhere! I'm also an Etsy junkie, so I will go take a look!

Wow you are so generous in your giveaway! Thanks for participating. a far as suggestions for appliques/embroideries go, I have always been a fan of animals. Birds, squirrels, fish, turtles, deer, horses, skunks, its all good really. I think it would also be interesting to try an industrial motif on vinyl. Just a thought...

I love all of your items! What a fantastic set of giveaways! My favorite is the birdie wristlet - I just love birds. Your choice of material makes it oh so special & cute - love it! The vintage pillowcases are awesome too - is there anything better than vintage?!

Pick me! Okay, I just had to do that! I've been reading so many blogs and so many comments on my own that I am a bit more than feeling loopy!

From ziggzagging around your blog I see that you, like me, like to do several crafts.

I can't have just one or two going myself. How many projects do you have going at any one time?

sherri s. said...

I'm so glad to see your vintage pillowcases. I have to confess to snarfing them up at estate sales but then I'm at a loss as to what to do with them (no little girls here to make cute dresses for!). So the apron is fab...thanks for all your prizes...so nice of you!

Elizabeth said...

i LOVE your papercrafting bundles! LOVE! the vinyl applique is something i have never tried and looks intimidating...maybe someday. :)

That apron is fantastic! I LOVE IT! I'll be checking in on that tutorial should I find a minute and fabric to make one myself. Also, that 60's flower power pillowcase....that came straight out of my grandma's linen closet. I don't know how you got it, but it was in there 10 years ago. ;)
Thanks for a great giveaway!

Love that vinyl purse. LOVE. I just made my first quilt with old pillowcases and I'm HOOKED! It's super fun and such a thrifty way to get fabric! Was just at my niece's graduation in SK and went to the tiny salvation army store there and found some awesome sheets. Yay!!
